Work is set to get underway on a series of new schemes as Thurrock Council continues its £6million investment in cycle route improvements.

A number of improvements have already been made to Thurrock’s cycling network as part of the council’s three year Cycle Infrastructure Delivery Plan, which is due to be completed in 2019.

They include the creation of a continuous link from Aveley Bypass to South Ockendon, where the borough’s first ever Tiger crossing* has been installed.

Further works got underway on Purfleet Bypass last week and are due to begin in Chafford Hundred next week.

Councillor Aaron Watkins, portfolio holder for Environment and Highways, said: “Encouraging sustainable transport such as cycling forms a vital part of our Active Travel Strategy and we are very grateful to the Government for awarding us the funding for this important programme of works.

“Improving cycling routes in Thurrock will help remove some of the physical barriers for residents and create a continuous walking and cycling network across the borough.

“By encouraging residents to use sustainable, low carbon transport, we hope these works will also have a positive impact on the environment, and people’s health and wellbeing.”
