A FORMER councillor and a councillor were assaulted as they attempted to assist staff during a robbery. 

Thurrock Independents Councillor, James Baker, and former councillor Chris Baker both required medical treatment following the incident. 

The pair had attempted to stop an alleged robbery in the Co-op, on Canterbury Parade, South Ockendon. 

Thurrock Independents Spokesman said: "Last night (Sunday 22nd July) we were informed by former Thurrock Independents Councillor Chris Baker that he had been assaulted in South Ockendon along with current Councillor James Baker and a member of the public while trying to assist shop staff during a robbery by approximately 15-18 individuals.

"Chris and James Baker were taken to hospital were they received medial attention.

"There is an ongoing police investigation so we will not be able to comment further on the situation at this current time."

Essex Police have been contacted for comment.
