Thurrock Museum has been awarded £10,000 by the Heritage Lottery Fund to help it catalogue the treasure trove of local historical artefacts currently stored in their archives.

Thurrock’s Attic will see the museum organising its collection of historical artefacts so that new items can be put on public display. The project will start later this summer and is expected to take a year.

It signals an exciting future for the museum as it continues to celebrate the history of the borough from its home in the Thameside Theatre complex.

Cllr Deborah Huelin, Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: “Thurrock Museum has an impressive collection which covers the entire history of the borough.

"Their collection includes the earliest known Thurrock coins dating to 75BC, flint tools, Roman pottery, Saxon artefacts, medieval finds from Grays, and interesting objects dating all the way up to the last century.

“This Heritage Lottery Funding is a fantastic boost for the museum.

"It will help it organise and catalogue their collection so they can put even more of the borough’s rich and fascinating history on display.”
