IN this week’s Down Memory Lane, we look at South Ockendon.
In the bottom right photo we see the church and green at the centre of the village in 1920.
Bottom left we are looking up the high street in 1910.
Then we see the dining room of Belhus mansion. In 1923 the house was said to be haunted and sightings have been reported by many witnesses over the years.
Even the servant’s cottage is said to have had a ghost.
Lastly is the drawing room 1923. The fireplace can still be seen if you visit Thurrock museum.
Unfortunately, the attractive wood panelling around the walls was striped down and used as firewood by soldiers during the Second World War.
