THURROCK councillor Carl Morris is calling on police to enforce a lorry ban in Grays but at the same time he wants to know if HGV drivers who have been unfairly treated in another part of the borough will get any recompense.
Councillor Morris has discovered that signs imposing a weight restriction in Devonshire Road, Grays, should not have been erected and there is no restriction.
He has written to local police chief Alan Cotgrove to ask if drivers incorrectly stopped will be able to get redress and called on Thurrock Council to remove the misleading signs immediately.
Councillor Morris says: "Thurrock Council's highways officer Les Burns has confirmed to me that there is no legal weight limit in Devonshire Road.
"I understand that in the past HGVs legally using Devonshire Road have either been stopped and warned not to use the road, or ticketed and fined for using it.
"If this is the case, in view of the lack of a legal restriction on Devonshire Road what redress do these people have?"
He says the signs are forcing HGVs on to London Road on Grays and West Thurrock which are very densely populated areas with two primary schools.
However, he is also on the case of lorry drivers he says are illegally using the bus lane next to the width restriction in London Road (close to the junction with Askew Farm Road) and then using London Road illegally.
He said: "I would be grateful if this restriction could be positively enforced and HGVs prevented from abusing it."
Councillor Morris is also seeking a meeting with council officials and the police at the junction of London Road and Rosebery Road in a bid to alleviate collisions that occur there with regularity.
