FIREFIGHTERS rescued a horse from a muddy ditch as the sun was rising this morning.
The animal was first discovered in the ditch in Marshfoot Road, Chadwell St Mary, at about 6.10am yesterday.
Fire crews from Orsett and Great Baddow joined an animal rescue unit based in South Woodham Ferrers to free the horse.
The three specialised teams helped the horse move up the ditch to a shallower part.
By encouraging it up to the lower area of the ditch, it allowed the crews to use the equipment from the animal rescue unit to put under and around the horse and pull him up the embankment.
The horse was successfully rescued by 8.45am.
