Thurrock Adult Community College has been collaborating to meet community priorities around poor dental hygiene in Thurrock.
It is national smile month and the college has developed a fun tooth fairy workshop for families with children in reception and year one, available in schools across the area.
Recent research shows that around 30% of children and young people in the borough experience tooth decay which will lead to pain and costly procedures.
Through family fun activities which include receiving a letter from the tooth fairy and making an envelope to leave milk teeth out for the fairy, these workshops aim to:-
Improve brushing techniques
Help parents identify nasty hidden sugars in everyday foods
Encourage regular visits to a NHS dentist
Debbie Farrell, the Lead Regional Manager for Essex ‘Career Ready’ organisation and Julia Wright, Thurrock Adult Community College’s Family Learning Manager have been collaborating to put the project together.
Paul Wilson, Community Matters Team Leader at P&G’s Fairy Plant in West Thurrock said: “We have worked with Thurrock Adult Community College on a number of projects and were delighted to support them in their campaign around National Smile Month. As a local employer here in West Thurrock, we believe our brands, like Oral-B, can be a force for good in the local community”.
