A murder investigation has been launched after a stabbing near a school.

Essex Police contacted by the ambulance service shortly before 7.40pm yesterday, with reports a man had been found injured in Queen Elizabeth Drive.

Despite the efforts of paramedics, he died at the scene.

Detectives have launched a murder investigation and are keen to speak to anyone who saw what happened or has CCTV footage.

A section of the road and an alleyway near Dessons Court have been cordoned off while forensic examination work is carried out.

Gary Knowles, 46, who lives in the road, said: "When I heard the police sirens, I thought it was a domestic or a burglary.

"Then I heard the chopper and that's when I realised it was serious.

"I can't believe that somebody has been stabbed."

Another resident, who asked not to be named, added: "This is an awful incident and I hope the police catch the person who did it."

Giffards Primary School remains open, despite the cordon close to the school.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the West Major Crime Team on 101 or email scd.appeals.essex@essex.pnn.police.uk
