c2c carriage lock-out

SCORES of commuters were forced to stand on the way home tonight (Tuesday) after a c2c train carriage was locked.

The 6.25pm train from London Fenchurch Street to Shoebury was reduced from eight carriages to seven and running with 60 fewer seats.

The lock-out happened after the train's earlier journey from Grays to Fen-church Street.

It is not known what was wrong with the locked carriage.

Rail company spokesman Mike Lamport said this was normal procedure and trains were running to schedule.

He said: "It's much easier locking a carriage than delaying the trains or cancelling services.

"It's the least worse option if something has happened on the inward journey.

"This way we will keep the carriage shut off until the train returns to Shoebury, where we can deal with the problem."

*ENGINEERING works are planned this weekend, affecting c2c rail services between Barking and Grays, via Rainham.

Replacement buses will run from 6.10pm on Saturday until close of service on Sunday, calling at all stations.
