A person has been hit by a train on a level crossing.

The incident happened between East Tilbury and Stanford-le-Hope.

Train services running through these stations may be cancelled or diverted between Upminster and Pitsea. Disruption is expected until 7pm.

TfL Bus Route 370 between Upminster & Lakeside are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.

A spokesman from British Transport Police said: "We were called at 3.34pm to Golden Lane level crossing in Stanford le Hope, to reports that a person had been struck by a train. Officers and ambulance service attended but sadly the person died at the scene.

"The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious.

"We are working to identify the person and inform their next of kin."

One witness, Harley Brickwood, who works in Stanford-le-Hope, described the scene.

He said: "I was in a bit of traffic at the Stanford le hope train station waiting to pass a vehicle and then I saw a train at the station and there was loads of people everywhere.

"So I carried on driving towards grays and then I saw police cars skidding round the corners towards the station from the old a13.

"I saw three then further along that road I see another six police vehicles racing towards the station.

"Then my friend had told me a train has hit something beetween Stanford and Mucking."
