A man is alleged to have attempted to stab police officers multiple times during a ten-man brawl.

Plain clothed Metropolitan police officers were visiting Grays last night, when a fight involving around ten men broke out on George Street.

The officers intervened in an attempt to defuse it, and one man pulled a knife out and attempted to stab the officers multiple times.

Essex officers managed to arrest the man, while the rest of the group fled on foot.

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted GBH with intent, affray and threats with an offensive weapon.

Investigating officer DC Marc Makin said: “There is no suggestion that anyone has been stabbed, however we are aware of one victim who was injured during the fight. We would like to make a direct appeal to this man to come forward and talk to us.

“Officers from different forces will always be on hand to help out with incidents even if it is not within the district they are actively patrolling. We would like to thank the Metropolitan police officers for the action they took out of their area in the interest of public safety.”

The officers were in the area following a joint operation that had taken place earlier in the day with Operation Raptor.
Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact Grays CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
