A man has denied charges of attempted murder and possession of a bladed weapon.

Huseyin Abuzet, 37, of Cumberland Road, Chafford Hundred, appeared at Southend Crown Court before Judge Samantha Leigh this morning.

He was charged with the attempted murder of a man and possession of a kitchen knife in Cumberland Road.

The charges relate to an incident which took place earlier this year.

Police were called to reports of an assault in Cumberland Road, Grays at around 2.50pm on Sunday, August 27.

Officers attended and found a man in his 40s with stab wounds to his body.

He was been taken to hospital for treatment with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

Abuzet denied both charges and a trial date was set for February 19, 2018.

His wife and two family friends were present in the public gallery but she was asked to leave by Judge Leigh as she is a potential witness in the trial.

Judge Leigh said: "Your trial date has now been set for February 19. There may be another hearing before then but I don't know yet.

"You remain in custody in the meantime."
