EAST Thurrock United’s unbeaten start to the season was brought to an end as 10-man Truro City scored a last-gasp penalty to climb to the summit of the National League South.

Lewis Smith looked as though he had won a point for Rocks with a second-half leveller only for the Cornwall outfit to hit back late on.

Only goal difference separated the sides ahead of the match, although it was the visitors who made the early running.

The first goal of the afternoon was born out of an error by home goalkeeper Lukas Lidakevicius.

A slip allowed Tyler Harvey a run on goal and, after his initial effort had been saved, Noah Keats tucked home the loose ball.

The game burst into life, with Ed Palmer shown a straight red card for Truro following a touchline melee, but the visitors were not unduly tested as the half came to a conclusion.

Femi Akinwande had the first shot of the second period but it wasn’t until 62 minutes that their attacking efforts were to be rewarded.

A neat through ball by Sam Higgins found Smith and he tucked home to level the scores.

But Truro were to have the last laugh.

Despite playing more than an hour with 10 men, Truro substitute River Allen was bundled over in the box by Reece Harris, and Connor Riley-Lowe scored from 12 yards.
