A huge blaze that has erupted in a derelict block of flats has spread to the supermarket next door.

The fire took hold of the unbuilt flats in Howard Road, behind Sainsbury's and Banatyne's Gym, Chafford Hundred.

10 fire crews are on scene battling the blaze which is now believed to be under control but there are reports it has spread to the back of Sainsbury's.

The supermarket has been completely evacuated as a precaution.

Police have warned people to stay away from the area while emergency services deal with the incident.

Traffic is being affected as fire engines are believed to have closed the road so motorists are noticing queues on the A13 and Arterial Road in West Thurrock.
