More than 600 Thurrock A-Level students are celebrating a 96.4 per cent pass rate after receiving results yesterday.

Councillor for Health and Education, James Halden said: “I am thrilled for so many of our students and proud of all their hard work.

"I am equally proud of the strides our sixth forms have made at Gable Hall, Harris Ockendon and Ormiston, all of whom have had an increase on previous year’s results.

“Results and good grades are being achieved, and a lot of hard work has gone in over two years despite the tougher end of course examinations and I’m incredibly pleased students have done themselves proud with a 96.4 per cent pass mark.

“A-levels open up many doors to further educational and vocational choices.

"I'd like to wish all students the very best for the future as they look ahead and make more decisions about work and further studies."

This year's provisional figures show that the percentage of students achieving A*-E passes in school sixth forms including Palmer’s College is 96.4 per cent.

Palmer’s College again maintained an impressive 97 per cent pass rate for the fifth year in a row with 20 subjects gaining a perfect 100 per cent pass rate.

Among the students celebrating was Fatima Dabo, 19, who achieved an A in accounting, A in Portuguese and a distinction* in Business, as well as a B in Maths.

She is looking forward to going to study accounting at Surrey University.

She said: “These results are so pleasing because it shows if you manage your time well, it all pays off in the end.”

The Stanford and Corringham 6th Form Centre is also celebrating another good year of GCE Advanced Level and Vocational results as achievement hits a new high.

Thurrock Gazette:

At A Level 49 per cent of entries achieved an A*, A or B grade, and 23 per cent achieved A* or A grades. Notable success stories include Erin Raif with 4 A*s and Marianne Richardson with 2 A*s and 2As.

All students sitting BTEC Vocational qualifications gained two or more passes, 93 per cent gained 3 passes and 90 per cent of all results are at Distinction* or Distinction.

At Ockendon School Academy and Studio School 93% of students achieved an A*-E grade at A level and all students that intended to go to university have managed to secure a place.

Harris Academy Chafford Hundred reported 100 per cent of their students passed their A-levels for the second year in a row.

A total of 120 students at the Academy collected an excellent set of A-level results.

Overall, 100 per cent of entries across the 27 subjects on offer achieved pass marks, with 25 per cent achieving A* and As.

The college also hailed some outstanding successes from individual students, including Isaiah Murray, 18, of Chafford Hundred, who got A* and 2 As, and Christopher Richards, who got 2 A*s, and an A and is off to Warwick to study Mathematics.

Thurrock Gazette:

At Ormiston Park Academy a fifth of all grades achieved by A-level students are a top grade (A* or A), with that figure jumping to 44% for all academic qualifications, including A levels.

There was a 100 per cent pass rate across A levels. Yasemin Acikel received three A grades and has been accepted into the University of Westminster to study psychology.

Emmanuella Williams, a student who relocated from Italy to study A levels in psychology, health and social care and sociology has been accepted to study psychology at Canterbury Christ Church University.

This is an excellent set of results for the academy, with A-levels on average up by over one grade, and academic qualifications up by two grades.

The A-level average point score (APS) was up by 12 percentage points, whilst the academic qualifications APS was up 18 percentage points.

Mr Halden continued: “Clearly the results we are seeing from Palmers show a very challenging backdrop.

"The first thing that must be said is that I know first-hand how hard students at Palmers worked and that they should be proud of all their hard work.

“Going forward, the council has been working hard to support Palmers in finding a new relationship and this has now been achieved with a merger with Seevic College in Benfleet.

“We look forward to working with the new team to ensure Palmers now goes from strength to strength. Certainly as an ex-student at Palmers, I look forward to helping the new college establish itself as an outstanding Thurrock institution.”
