A man was detained by police under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital after standing on a bridge over the A1089.

Several roads in the area were closed for two hours and traffic brought to a standstill while officers spoke to the man in a bid to bring him to safety.

A spokeswoman from the police said: "Police were contacted at 7.55pm on Monday June 26 with concerns for the welfare of a man on a bridge on the A1089 in Grays.

"Officers spoke to the man and he was brought to safety. He was detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital.

"The road was closed in both directions until about 9.30pm while emergency services were on scene."

The road was blocked both ways between the A126 Marshfoot Road and A13 due to the police incident.

The Grays Local Policing team took to Twitter to warn motorists to avoid the area while the incident is resolved.

The man was eventually brought down from the bridge safely and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Traffic returned to normal shortly after 10pm.
