TILBURY Power Station’s demolition will reach another milestone at the beginning of June with the third of the site’s controlled explosive demolitions planned.

Since the beginning of last year, contractor Brown and Mason has been progressing well with the demolition of the former power station. Works have now been completed on the site of the former older ‘A’ station.

At 2pm on Thursday, June 1, the third explosive demolition will take place at site.

It will bring down three of the four original steel structures known as precipitators 8, 9 &10.

These structures, each approximately 20m long, 15m wide and 30m high were used to clean the flue gasses before they were released from the station chimney when the station was operational.

Although the explosion and collapse may be heard off site, any noise will be over very quickly.

Any dust generated will be controlled on site and road sweepers will be available for neighbouring roads, although it’s anticipated that they will not be required.

To protect everyone on site and in the local area an exclusion zone will be in place before, during and immediately after the explosion.

The exclusion zone is well within the power station boundary fence and there will be no public access to the area or impact on the local road network.

The other main structures such as the chimneys, boiler house, turbine hall and bunker house are scheduled for explosive demolition later this year.

Further details on these milestones will be provided nearer the time. The complete demolition of the site is expected towards the end of 2018.
