TOUCHING tributes have been paid to a “visionary” whose roots are steeped in south Essex.

Sir John Whitmore, Baronet of Orsett, died aged 79, was the last of the Whitmore's to own Orsett Hall, which had been in his family for more than 70 years.

Spending his early years as a racing driver, he would compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours series and won the British Saloon Car Championship.

Sir John also left his mark around the world as a renowned management consultant and author.

Performance Consultants, the international company founded by Sir John, announced his death this month which has prompted tributes to be paid.

David Brown, the company's CEO, described Sir John as a "visionary who gave his life, time and money to others who were less fortunate.

Mr Brown added that Sir John foresaw the banking crisis in three years before it struck in 2007.

John McFarlane, chairman of Barclays, said: “Sir John Whitmore shines a light on what it takes to create high performance and unpicks the myths around coaching.

"For his enduring impact on our working lives, leaders and employees the world over are truly fortunate.”
