THURROCK Council believes government proposals could deliver more affordable homes in the borough.

Members of the Housing Overview and Scrutiny committee heard about the potential impact of the Government’s recent Housing White Paper.

It aims to reflect the increase of people living in the private rented sector and reduction in owner-occupiers.

Thurrock itself has seen a 15 per cent rise in private-rented tenants in the last 10 years, and aims to deliver new homes.

The committee welcomed many elements of the paper and benefits some policies may bring to Thurrock residents.

Gerard Rice, chairman of the committee, said: “The new national planning framework should deliver more affordable homes which would be well received including modular housing.

"Government appears to recognise the challenge many places face including Thurrock.”

Comments on the White Paper can be submitted up until May 2
