SCHOOLS in Thurrock could have their funding slashed, a new study has revealed.

Research by the National Union of Teachers and other unions has compared each school’s funding in 2015/16 with the funding the Government predicts it will receive in 2019-20 under its proposed new National Funding Formula, adjusted for the impact of inflation and cost increases imposed on schools.

Some of the worse-hit schools across the borough could lose more than £700,000 in funding, along with teachers and teaching assistants.

If the Government does agree the new funding formula, the report predicts East Tilbury Primary School and Nursery, in Princess Margaret Road, East Tilbury would have £293,349 of its funding cut.

This would mean the school would get £524 less per pupil with nine teaching posts being cut.

The Gateway Academy, in Marshfoot Road, Tilbury, is expected to see £553,998 cut from its funding.

This would work out as a loss of £543 per pupil with 14 teachers also lost.

Palmer’s College, in Chadwell Road, Grays, may see one of the largest cuts as it’s expected £709,628 of the college’s funding would be cut under the Government plans.

This works out at £364 lost per pupil with 39 teaching assistants at the college lost.

Jerry Glazier, Essex NUT General Secretary said: ‘Under this Government’s funding policies, there are no winners, only losers. Essex schools are being forced to make difficult and damaging decisions that no headteacher should have to make.”
