THURROCK Council is looking into an increase to council tax of 1.99 per cent.

This is part of the local council tax reduction scheme, which works to support low income earners.

It is also forms part of the draft general fund budget, which helps the council create a balanced budget for the financial year 2017/2018.

The issue was discussed and initially agreed by councillors but it is subject to agreement of the full council.

The council is looking into changes that could bring an extra £100,000 for the council.

Rob Gledhill, leader of Thurrock Council said: “It’s up to each local authority to set their own criteria on the local council tax reduction scheme and the deadline for applications is January 31.”
