IT’S been well said before that young people often get a bad press, capturing the attention of the media for all the wrong reasons.

They are, at times, an easy target to grumble about.

But the criticism, can of course, be justified. Yet the overwhelming feeling is that it’s the minority who often give the majority a bad name.

So let's revel in some good news. And it’s always lovely when we can.

The Gazette featured the heart-warming, and inspiring, story of young Katie Yoxall-Davies.

What Katie has achieved is quite remarkable. As if living with her complex heart condition wasn’t challenging enough, she has conjured up the energy to raise an incredible £35,000 through a series of fund-raising events. This cash is now being used to dispatch 12 defibrillators across the county.

So it’s fitting the 12-year-old, who lives in Stanford-le-Hope, is getting the recognition she deserves and we whole-heartedly congratulate her here at the Gazette, for winning the prestigious Child of Courage Award .

Her condition means Katie’s heart beats at a phenomenal rate, making her weak, tired and dizzy. As her mum Charlotte put it: “Most people wouldn’t get out of bed, but she keeps positive.” And it’s that positivity which has powered a charity drive set to save lives across Essex.
