SCHOOLS from Thurrock took part in the Rotary ‘Young Chef’ competition.

The Thurrock heat was organised by the Rotary Club of Grays Thurrock and held at the South Essex College in Grays.

Students from local secondary schools had to prepare a three course healthy meal comprising a starter, main course and dessert for two people costing less than £15, in two hours.

On arrival at the college the students had to provide a copy of their menu and costing sheet. The head chef at the college Peter Byrne spoke to the students and once he was sure everyone knew the rules started the competition.

At the end of the competition Peter who had been keeping a close eye on the students signified that the two hours was up.

He then had to announce the winner of the event. During his final comments Peter said: “That to put a 3 course meal together in 2 hours is a fantastic achievement”. He then announced that Sasha Martin from the Gateway Academy had won and would be representing Thurrock at Chelmsford in the new year.

After the competition Sasha said: “She enjoyed the pressure in the kitchen having to make sure that she completed all the challenges in the time allowed ”.
