FRIENDS and relatives of a well-known health campaigner are fundraising towards her bucket list.

Wendy Gavin, 57, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2012 and despite bravely fighting the illness, friends say she is “on her last legs.”

The mum-of-three has a dying wish of having her autobiography published, but publishers say this will cost £695.

An appeal has been launch to raise the money for this and Wendy has other dying wishes too.

“Two are probably out of my reach,” said Wendy.

They are to meet Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall, to watch Arsenal play live and then meet the team, and to have a break away from the house she lives alone in, even just for a weekend.

The book is called Just Visiting as it also refers to how Wendy has suffered epileptic fits since a child.

“It’s like been reborn again,” she said.

“I have put that in my book to let people know what it is like to be epileptic and having a fit,” she said.

The book also details an abusive marriage and how she came out of that, men she fell in love with, how her face suffered scalding, how she needed laser treatment aged 17 for cancerous cells on her ovaries and then suffered a hysterectomy in her 30s.

This she hopes will also help cancer sufferers cope with their diagnosis, adding Wendy had to bring up three children on her own.

“If I can do it, you can,” she said.

The book also tells of Wendy’s charity work and the health campaigns that followed her diagnosis in 2012.

In 2013, Wendy recorded a charity CD Heaven is Waiting to raise money for Macmillan cancer Care nurses and boost chemotherapy treatment facilities at Clacton Hospital.

Wendy also campaigned to save the Peter Bruff mental health ward as well as save a Clacton drop-in centre.

“I would like to see my book published before popping my clogs,” she added.

Joanne Horwood of Jaywick is planning fundraising events and seeking donations to help with the bucket list, feeling a publisher seeking £695 “is a bit naughty.”

“I have been a good friend of Wendy’s for many years. She has done a lot for charity. I want to help her. Wendy is on her last legs. I do not know how long she has got,” Joanne said.
