A MAN who appeared in court charged with two murders claimed he is not the person prosecutors believe he is.

Ali Qazimaj, from Tilbury, has been charged with the murders of Peter Stuart, 75, and his wife Sylvia, 69.

Mr Stuart died from multiple knife wounds.

His body was discovered in woods nears Weybread, Suffolk on June 3.

The body of Mrs Stuart has never been found.

Prosecutors claim Qazimaj, 42, was the man in the dock of Ipswich Crown Court on Friday.

The man in the dock instead claimed he was Vital Dapi, an Albanian citizen who has been wrongly extradited from Luxembourg.

He also claims to have been mistreated while being held in Luxembourg.

Paul Scothern, prosecuting, said: “The Crown’s case is this is Ali Qazimaj who was arrested on June 16.

They claim his fingerprints match and they have said it will take seven days for him to be positively identified from those in the area around the murders who know him.

Stephen Rose, defending, said: “He is not the man he is being accused of being.

“The defendant has listed a number of concerns about his treatment in Luxembourg.”

Judge David Goodin remanded Qazimaj / Dapi into custody for 28 days before a plea hearing on August 19.

By then it is hoped any dispute over his true identity will have been resolved.
