Tonight’s debate on the upcoming EU referendum in Grays has been cancelled following the killing of a Labour MP.

Grays Parish Church was due to hold a debate between MP Rochford and Southend East James Duddridge, and Councillor Gerard Rice, representing Leave, with former Thurrock MP Andrew MacKinlay, and Kevin McNamara who is the Thurrock coordinator for the Stronger In campaign, representing Remain.

The debate has been cancelled following the killing of Labour MP Jo Cox in Birstall, West Yorkshire, following a constituency surgery earlier today in which she was repeatedly shot and stabbed. She died at 1.48pm from her injuries.

Reverend Darren Barlow said St Peter and St Paul’s Church on Grays High Street will stay open from 6.30pm for prayer, while refreshments will also be available in the church hall.

In tribute to the memory of Jo Cox, Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle-Price and former MP Andrew MacKinlay will participate in Prayers and reflections from 7.30pm.

Those who wish to pay their respects to Jo Cox’s memory or spend time in quiet prayer or reflection are very welcome to attend, the Reverend added.

Both the Leave and Remain campaigns agreed to suspend campaigning today in respect for Mrs Cox and her family.

The Church will be open at 6.30pm for refreshments before Prayers and reflections at 7.30pm.
