A MOTORCYCLIST has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition following an crash in Leigh

London Road was closed between Dawlish Drive and Elmsleigh Drive following an accident outside the Elms pub shortly before 11am.

The Air Ambulance landed in the middle of London Road as paramedics and other medical staff were at the scene.

An ambulance spokesman said: "We were called to an RTC involving and motorbike and a car at 10.23am. We sent a rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and an ambulance officer as well as the Hertfordshire air ambulance.

"We treated one patient, a male in his twenties who sustained very serious injuries. he has a very badly broken leg, a very serious head injury and a pelvic injury. His condition is critical.

"The patient was conscious and breathing and has been airlifted to hospital."

A police spokeswoman added": "Police were called at around 10.25am today to reports of a collision involving a motorbike and a car in London Road, Leigh, near to the Elms pub.

"Officers and the ambulance service attended and the motorcyclist was taken by air ambulance to the Royal London hospital with head injuries. He is believed to be in a critical condition."

The accident has caused severe delays as police divert traffic towards Leigh Broadway.

The incident has now been cleared and the road reopened.
