A MAJOR road in Southend was blocked for two hours following an accident between two vehicles.

Victoria Avenue was blocked in both directions at Fairfax Drive following a collision between a maroon Ford Fiesta and a black Renault Clio at about 2.50pm.

Although the cars did not appear to be badly damaged, two people were taken to hospital, and the road was blocked for about two hours while the cars were recovered.

An ambulance spokesman said: “The East of England Ambulance Service Trust was called to a road traffic collision on Victoria Avenue, Southend.

“Two ambulances and an ambulance officer attended and treated two patients.

“They were taken to Southend Hospital for further care. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.”

Amin Bakshi at The Pizza Man takeaway added: “I heard the sound of a crash and went out to see three or four cars in the road together.

“It happened at about 3pm and the road was only just reopened about two hours later.”

Rebecca McKenzie of Bridal Boutique added many motorists were diverted down Priory Crescent or turned around to avoid the accident.
