The winners of the Thurrock Council road safety competition were given a fantastic surprise when they arrived at school on recently.

The Council provided bags full of road safety goodies to the winners.

Niamh Warby, St Thomas of Canterbury Primary School and Kayzia Arhin, Warren Primary School were the lucky winners after taking part in the pedestrian training scheme, organised by the council’s road safety team,

The scheme is undertaken in every primary school in Thurrock to prepare the young people for Thurrock’s busy roads, in an attempt to reduce the number of child casualties.

To assess how much a child has learned, and to monitor the project, evaluation forms are given to every pupil in Year 6 participating in the training.

A prize draw is held with the winners chosen from the 16 schools taking part and those who returned their forms.

Cllr Oliver Gerrish, Thurrock’s portfolio holder for transportation said: “It is essential children are given the appropriate skills and information so they can use our roads safely – lessons that will be with them throughout their lives.”
