A MAIN road through Southend was blocked following a smash between two cars.

A silver people carrier from AC Cars and a black Ford car crashed at the junction of York Road and Southchurch Avenue just before 10am today.

Southchurch Avenue and York Road were blocked by the accident, with York Road being cleared at about 11am.

An unmarked police car joined two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle at the scene.

A woman driving the Ford and another woman who was a passenger in the taxi were taken to hospital.

An East of England Ambulance spokesman said: "We were called at 9.54am on Monday, July 27, to reports of a road traffic collision on Southchurch Avenue, Southend.

"A rapid response vehicle, which arrived at the scene within five minutes, was sent with two ambulances.

"The ambulances took two patients to Southend Hospital, with one complaining of back pain.

"Another patient was assessed at the scene but did not need to go to hospital."
