FAMILIES will fight the closure of a Grays care home, which could shut due to increased care costs.

The Family Mosaic runs the Coach House, in Woodward Heights, which cares for 13 residents with a range of neurological conditions who need 24-hour care.

Bosses have told the clinical commissioning groups that fund the patients that care costs need to rise 40 per cent per patient – up from an average of £1,350 to £1,900 a week.

Family Mosaic says if the costs aren’t met, the alternative is rehoming patients and closing the home.

Families of residents in the home are now getting together to try to save it.

A Facebook group, called Save the Coach House Nursing Home, has been set up and families are to meet Thurrock councillors.

Mother of three Hayley Glover, 47, has been at the Coach House for nearly 20 years after being struck by a car.

Her sister Sue Cowell, 44, from Basildon, said the closure threat was heartbreaking for residents and staff.

She said: “My sister has got all she needs. There are no other care homes that can look after her. It’s all she knows.

“The residents are really upset about it. They’re shocked and distressed.

It’s their home. They’re in no man’s land.”

Ms Cowell added: “The staff are fantastic, it’s like a family.

They know everybody and are just as upset about this. They can’t help support us because of a conflict of interests with the company, so it’s really difficult for them. They really want to support us.”

Family Mosaic said it was losing £400,000 a year running the service.

A statement added: “We are committed to Coach House residents and their families and appreciate their anxiety and concern.

We have made arrangements to see everyone connected individually and we will ensure we are available to answer questions and support people as they adjust to this news and participate in discussions.”
