HAYLEY McLean said her bronze medal at the British Championships means she will have something to show for what has been a tough season.

The Stanford-le-Hope star ran her fastest 400m hurdles time of the year to win a bronze medal in Birmingham for the second year in a row.

“My aim before the championships was just to make the final,” said McLean who ran 58.60s. “I didn’t really believe it until I had crossed the line.

“I was so happy. It was more relief than anything to be honest. I’ve now got something to show for the season.”

McLean, who represented England at the Commonwealth Games last year, came close to writing off her season after suffering a seven-inch tear to her thigh in the spring.

But she is working her way back to full fitness and said getting a bronze medal after nearly two months out was something special.

“I didn’t want this season to be a forgotten season,” she said. “I wanted to get something out of it and I have with this medal.

“Hopefully I can build on this now. Because of the time I spent out, I think I’m going to peak in August so hopefully I can get faster and faster.”
