PURFLEET will become the “Venice of Essex” for a day with its own masked ball this month.

The Costume Party is the final event in a week-long opera festival – FUSED – run by the Royal Opera House.

Organisers have promised a riot of colour when the domed building at the High House Production Park throws open its doors to the public.

Visitors will be able to make their own outfits and get a once-a-year opportunity to wear ROH costumes, with the event basically an excuse to dive into the borough’s biggest dressing-up box.

As well as dressing to impress, opera fans and tiny tots will get a chance to see dancers from the Royal Ballet and Thurrock’s Chance to Dance Company perform in an interactive piece from the Firebird.

Carmen will also sing on top of a giant costume tower, made by arts organisation Kinetika.

The High House Production Park makes costumes and sets for the Royal Opera House productions, and is also host to the new Costume Centre.

Jillian Barker, of the Royal Opera House, said: “The Costume Party will definitely be a really fun day for any age and it’s a fabulous way to celebrate our new completed Costume Centre.”

The FUSED festival starts tomorrow and runs through to Saturday, July 11. The Costume Party is at the High House Production Park on July 11, from noon to 4pm. Free entry to all.
