A spokesman yesterday said inquiries into the accident were ongoing.

Police said the pedestrian was struck by a Toyota Corolla, travelling in the direction of Halifax, as she crossed the road. The driver left the scene of the accident.

A 43-year-old Dewsbury man was later arrested, initially for failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and then on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He was released on bail.

Passers by, including cab drivers, rushed to the stricken woman's aid and tried to give first aid until emergency services arrived.

A member of staff at the Texaco service station, at the junction of the accident, said the collision had taken place on the road outside Harry's Carvery.

She said: "Police have been in to view our CCTV, but it doesn't cover that section of the road. The road was closed until around 5.30am, but everything had been cleared away by the time our staff got to work."

Councillor John Lawson (Lib Dem, Cleckheaton), said: "It is unusual for it to happen at that time of the morning, rather than during the school-run or rush hour. It is not a junction that residents have spoken to me about in terms of road safety, nobody has flagged it up as an accident blackspot."

PC Martin Ward, of MCET, said: "The pedestrian, who is from the Cleckheaton area, was taken to Leeds General Infirmary with life threatening injuries.

"The driver of the vehicle, a 43-year-old man from Dewsbury, later reported the incident at Dewsbury Police Station and was arrested.

"I am appealing to any witnesses or anyone with information in relation to this incident to come forward and speak to officers."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101, quoting log number 203 from May 16.
