DARING superheroes abseiled down the Southend Hospital tower to raise money for charities close to their heart.

The annual Tackle the Tower challenges people to abseil 154ft down the hospital tower, with a superhero theme strongly encouraged, accompanied by professional climbing company Mile End Climbing Wall.

Many participants, some of which were afraid of heights, raised money for hospital wards and departments, while others raised money for charities they felt personally connected to.

Although the wind picked up at times, the sun was out for the majority of the event, held between 10am and 1pm on Saturday and with participants coming down the tower mostly in pairs.

Among the participants was ex-Royal Navy man Brian Knight, 80, who abseiled in aid of Southend’s keyhole urology campaign, which is under threat of being moved to the north of the county, as NHS chiefs want to have only one in the county.
