LEAGUE champions South Essex College narrowly missed out on doing the double at Wednesday’s Essex FA cup final.

The College’s Thurrock Football Academy team had already finished top of the Essex County Schools and Colleges U19 League this season and were looking to win another prize by lifting the Essex FA Bryon Coomer Under 19s Trophy for Colleges.

After a hotly contested match at Brentwood Town Football Club, team Thurrock were defeated 3-1 by Shenfield High’s sixth form squad.

The College team were easily the better side during the first half, with a goal from Captain James Wade securing the lead.

However, after half-time Shenfield came out with a lot of energy and scored two goals to make them victorious.

Joe Nightingill, Football Academy course leader and team manager, said: “Of course we’re disappointed but the lads worked really hard and I am proud of them.

“Remember we still beat lots of local teams to win the league this season and that’s an incredible achievement.”

Applications are still open to study the Level 3 Football Academy course at the College from September 2015. For more information and to join this winning team, visit https://www.southessex.ac.uk/course/football-academy-level-3-diploma
