A RANGE of health professionals throughout Thurrock have given their backing to Labour candidate Polly Billington ahead of next month’s general election.

Doctors, nurses and a GP who have served Thurrock residents over many years in the health service have jointly signed a letter backing the Ms Billington.

In an open letter they said: “We know Polly will always stand up for the NHS. She got into politics to improve the public services people rely on. Under a Labour government Polly will work to ensure people in Thurrock have access to good quality health care.”

The group of current and former NHS staff backed Labour's plan to “save the NHS” after five years of health service resources being ‘stretched thin’.

Ms Billington said: "The NHS is not safe in the Conservatives hands. I dread to think what will happen to our health service if they get back in. UKIP, whose leader wants a private insurance based system, can't be trusted with the NHS. Labour have a better plan which will to save our NHS".

Labour's plans include recruiting 20,000 nurses and 8,000 more GPs, paid for by taxes to the mega-rich and tobacco firms. If in government they will also guarantee a GP appointment within 48 hours.

Ms Billington added: "I'm pleased people who have worked in our NHS and care passionately about our health services are supporting me. They know that on May 7 we have a clear choice between a Labour or a Tory government.

“The outcome of this election will have huge implications for the NHS, including for our services in Thurrock. Only a Labour government will keep the walk-in service open in Grays. Together we can work to build an NHS fit for the 21st century.”
