Two fire crews fought a fire last night at 10.30pm at a house in Charlton Street in Grays.
Two crews from Grays used one hose reel and one main jet to tackle the flames in a first floor bedroom, and reported that 80% of the first floor was smoke-logged.
The fire was put out by 11.15pm and there were no reported casualties.
Once the fire was out, a high pressure fan was used to clear the building of smoke.
A fire investigation will be carried out to establish the cause of the incident.
