The European Tour are to study tapes of the BBC television coverage of the BMW PGA Championship - curtailed in Scotland because of the football cup final - after complaints about veteran commentator Peter Alliss.

There has also been criticism about the quality of coverage and George O'Grady, chief executive of the tour, said: "It's all on tape and I will make it my business to look at it. If I have a problem in any way, I'll discuss it first with the head of the BBC."

Nick Dougherty, an early finisher on Saturday when there were strong winds and the greens were bumpy, suggested criticism by former Ryder Cup player Alliss of the quality of putting was off the mark and that might have been because he has been away from playing the game for too long.

"I thought it was very sad. In fact, I thought it was disgusting," said Dougherty.

"I didn't think it was right and he ought to show us more respect.

"I wish we could take him out there and show him how difficult it was."

Alliss said on television yesterday: "We would be doing our viewers a disservice if we didn't attempt to tell them how it is."

O'Grady, meanwhile, said tour players were divided 50-50 over the issue of altering the minimum number of 11 tournaments to retain membership and it will be raised again at the next meeting of the tournament committee, at Loch Lomond in July.

Phil Mickelson, the world No.2, has said he is considering joining the European Tour. An increase in 11 events would obviously make it more difficult for him and O'Grady said: "There are lots of issues both ways."
