Alison Sheppard and Graeme Smith confirmed they are still Scotland's top two following their selection this week in the British team for the European championships in Istanbul later this month.

Last week's trials in Sheffield proved that Scottish swimming has a growing bundle of talent. Cameron Black, from the Fast Aquatics Swim Team, set a Scottish record in the 50 metres butterfly in finishing behind Mark Foster but ahead of James Hickman, while City of Edinburgh's Gregor Tait and Ian Edmond also finished in the medals.

But it was Sheppard and Smith who secured the wins, and both hit the form that suggested they could finish in the medals in Turkey.

Sheppard's run continued with a victory over Sue Rolph in a Commonwealth and British record in the 50m free-style. Her time of 25.47sec was just 0.11sec outside the Olympic pre-qualifying time.

''Now the target is a European medal. Inga de Bruin has swum under 25sec and will be the favourite, but the other places are wide open,'' said the Glasgow 26-year-old who has been a

regular in British teams since the 1988 Olympic Games.

Smith was an easy winner of the 1500m free-style, and he will also be aiming to hit medal form in Istanbul. It was in the European champion-ships four years ago that the Falkirk-born 22-year-old first came to the fore with a silver medal.

Meanwhile, for the Scots who just missed out on Turkey, the consolation is a trip to the Canadian National championships next month.
