ONE of the largest “fridges” in Europe is to be built at the Port of Tilbury.

The £20million temperature-controlled distribution centre – known as a “reefer” in the trade – will be built by Forth Ports Limited with NFT Distribution.

The new centre will create up to 500 jobs at the port and is expected to open later this year.

NFT claims the new centre will contribute towards minimising food miles.

The new container will be built next to the London Container Terminal.

Charles Hammond, from Forth Ports, owner of the port, said: “This is a very significant announcement for the Port of Tilbury. Ports are a key part of an efficient supply chain and it makes sense for businesses to use the port not only as an import/export service but as a logistics hub.”
