UKIP’S parliamentary candidate for Thurrock has claimed that Grays town centre is in danger of becoming a “no go area” if something isn’t done to combat crime and anti-social behaviour.
Tim Aker, who’s also a Thurrock councillor and MEP, was responding following an incident at the weekend which saw a man hit over the head by a gang and robbing him of hundreds of pounds.
Mr Aker, who lives in Grays, said: “It seems every week now there are muggings or break-ins. Just this weekend a gang attacked and robbed a man on the Argent Street roundabout. Residents are telling me on a daily basis they won’t go into Grays town centre at night.
“Something must be done to stop Grays becoming a no-go area, particularly at night time. It is no use burying heads in the sand - many don't feel safe and it is time to do something about it.
“As a Grays resident myself it is clear to see that large groups are regularly gathering in Grays at night, drinking alcohol on the street and creating an intimidating atmosphere. The Police should have a far greater presence and be moving gangs on at night.
“I’m not prepared to put up with this anymore. Residents deserve to feel safe in their own community. I will be writing to the Essex Police and Crime Commissioner and demanding urgent action to clean up Grays and give people the confidence to shop and visit Grays.”
