CHILDREN and adults at Arthur Bugler Junior and Infants schools have been recognised for their contribution to sustainable transport.

The school has received a bronze certificate in the Modeshift STARS, Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition for Schools, a national schools awards scheme that encourages walking, cycling or riding a scooter to school rather than being taken by car.

This not only cuts pollution and congestion but also improves pupils’ health and wellbeing.

Head teacher at the Stanford-le-Hope school, Karen Phillips said: “Teacher Leah Anderson and governor Carianne Mailey have put in a lot of hard work to get the children involved through activities like Walk to School, Bikeability and road safety awareness.

“But it wouldn’t have been possible to get to this level without the commitment of the children and their parents.”

Arthur Bugler is one of five schools in Thurrock to achieve bronze status. The others are Belmont Castle Academy; Bulphan C of E Primary; Lansdowne Primary Academy; and Woodside Academy.

The race is now on to see which school is the first to reach the next level and win silver.
