TECHNICAL training in the creative arts at South Essex College will be further enhanced, when The Backstage Centre in Purfleet becomes the first National College for the Creative and Cultural Industries.

The Government-backed, National College is to be established at the centre in the High House Production Park.

The College already offers a number of production arts courses on the site including technical theatre and make-up and hair for stage, TV, film and fashion. The new accreditation will provide further specialist training opportunities for the students.

Opening in September 2016, the college is part of a new wave of employer-led National Colleges to help the UK develop world-class practical skills.

Lid Dem MP and business secretary Vince Cable said: “The talent which brings plays, operas, and films to life on screen and stage is the driving force behind our world-leading creative sector.

“We must continue to invest in the next generation of talent. The National College for the Creative and Cultural Industries will train the technicians to support our country’s next award winning directors, musicians and actors.”

This announcement will attract more professionals to rehearse, record and film at the Centre, giving South Essex College students further opportunities to learn from industry experts.

Angela O'Donoghue, Principal and Chief Executive of South Essex College, said: “This is excellent news for our production arts classes, they will really benefit from the extra experience and contact with leading creative professionals.”
