MILLIONS of pounds worth of economic benefit was generated for Essex as the Tour de France raced past Chelmsford, a study has found.
The Three Inspirational Days report examined the economic and social impact of Essex, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire and London hosting the Grand Depart earlier this year.
It found the economic benefit to Essex and Cambridgeshire was to the tune of £10.5million, following the third stage of the race in the two counties and London on July 7, which pulled 1.5million spectators.
However it also said the overall economic benefit for these regions and Yorkshire is expected to top £150million due to the effect of increased tourism and long term trade deals.
Minister for Sport and Tourism Helen Grant said: "The Tour de France in the UK was an incredible success and once again showcased how well we put on major sporting events in this country.
"It was fantastic to see such huge crowds supporting the race in Yorkshire, Cambridge, Essex and London.
"It showed the passion Britain has for cycling and will have inspired many to take up the sport as well as giving a significant economic boost to the host regions."
