THIS week, we spoke to Verena Stewart, owner of dog grooming shop, Short Bark & Sides, in Broadway, Little Thurrock, Grays

Q: What do you love about Thurrock?

A: I love the people of Thurrock. I am originally from Hertfordshire, but I have grown to love Thurrock and the down-to-earth people who live here Q: What has kept you here?

A: It took me a while to settle in Thurrock, but I find the people friendly, with a real old school way about them, and they are always happy to help.

Q: How do you see the future for local businesses in the borough?

A: We, as a community, should cherish our local businesses and the services we provide, and be proud of our area.

The week I opened my business, in February 2012, I was in a car collision and fractured my spine in two places, so it was a real struggle to remain open in the first year, but I did and I’m almost healed.

Q: How do you think other parts of Essex see Thurrock?

A: We have a lot of unfair criticism about Thurrock, but I find it a warm and friendly place, with some fantastic small businesses, started by young people, and it makes me proud to be part of that.

Q: What made you start the business in Thurrock?

I found great premises just down the road from my boy’s school and Thurrock Council was very supportive with my rates for a new business.

Q: What involvement with the community does the business have?

I like to think people come to me for advice on their dogs. I have been a shoulder to cry on for many bereaved dog owners, which can be a devastating time.

Q: What is your favourite part of the Gazette?

My favourite parts are Down Memory Lane and to see what’s on in the area, which is always a lot more than people expect. We have it all.
