NINE primary schools across Thurrock have been cycling, scooting and walking to and from school in the last two weeks to rack up 840 miles.

The national cycling event took place in September and inspired Sustrans Bike It officer Hannah Brittain to set the challenge which comes to a close on Friday October 17.

Hannah said: “It’s been fantastic to see so many schools taking part in the challenge.

“The pupils have loved it, and parents and teachers have been joining in the fun by cycling or walking in to rack up more mileage for their school. Our hope is that they will continue to after the competition has ended.”

Pupils, teachers and parents have been earning two miles for cycling or scooting and one mile for walking.

Prizes include Extreme Mountain Bike Shows for the top two schools, smoothie bike sessions for runners up and spot prizes.

The competition is funded by Travel Thurrock, the council’s sustainable transport team, as part of the Bike It project.

The nine primary schools taking part are: Orsett C of E, St Mary’s RC, East Tilbury, Gateway Primary Free School, Bonnygate, and Kenningtons, Belmont Castle, Graham James and Woodside Academies.

The winners will be announced on Friday, October 31.
