URGENT calls have been made for improvements to a dangerous stretch of road in Orsett...after two men miraculously escaped serious injury in this horror smash.

One man was thrown from a window while the other was trapped inside after the crash between the Citroen car and a lorry in Brentwood Road at about 6.20am last Friday.

The men were left with back and neck injuries.

Renewed calls are now being made to make changes to the road where the accident happened, close to the Orsett Cock roundabout.

Susan Little, a Conservative councillor for Orsett, said: “The lay-by where lorries take a stop close to the Orsett Cock is very dangerous.

“Lorries are unable to see as they come out to turn right, so it is an accident blackspot with oncoming traffic. Having a ‘no right turn’ sign could be an option.

“The council must look at this spot and decide what the best result would be to prevent accidents.

Something needs to be done for the safety of motorists.”

Motorists have also shared their frustration with the road layout, saying that there have been far too many “near misses”.

Di Burkey commented on the Gazette’s Facebook page: “I pull out of that cut-in almost daily after walking my dogs – it is impossible to see any oncoming traffic and I wind down my window to also aid my hearing.

“The bushes there are also uncut and obstruct car drivers’ views. I have had many near-misses with traffic coming from the Orsett Cock.

“Lorry drivers may have an elevated view, but don’t have the acceleration to get out of the way of fastapproaching traffic. Something really needs to be done.”

Mick Thompson added: “I drive that way towork every day. I’ve seen so many near-misses at the spot and a few accidents, too.”

A Thurrock Council spokesman said officers had met police following the crash.

He said: “The council regularly monitors the roads and prioritises roads for treatment according to the number of injury accidents.”
