A MAN attempted to rape a woman in an alleyway.

The woman, who is in her 30s, was grabbed from behind by a man in dark clothing who then pushed her to the floor behind Webster Road, in Stanford-le-Hope.

He grabbed at her clothing, tearing it, before running off towards Hassenbrook School.

It happened just after midnight today.

The victim sustained bruising to her face.

The alleyway has been cordoned off while police carry out a forensic examination.

The offender is described as being a white male, around 5 ft 6 ins tall and wearing a black hooded top with dark jogging bottoms.

He appeared intoxicated.

Investigating Officer DI Richard Sage said: "The suspect ran away after hearing voices in the area so Iā€™m keen to speak to anyone who might have been around Websters Road or close by between the hours of 10pm and 1.30am.

"I would encourage anyone who was in the area to come forward and speak to police, any information may contain a vital clue as to who was responsible for this crime .ā€
