SUPERPORT DP World has released a series of videos in a bid to recruit more staff.

Women are being invited to consider port work and climb to the top of London Gateway’s new high-tech cranes.

DP World has announced a further 50 jobs at its newly-opened international container terminal and wants as many women as men to apply for the terminal operative positions, which involve manning cranes and vehicles to move goods from ship to shore.

Simon Moore, DP chief executive, said: “We have a number of women in our team, but not as many as we would like.”

One of those taking the plunge into port work is former beautician Nicki Allabush from Stanford-le-Hope, who has been a terminal operative for 18 months.

She said: “I absolutely love the challenge this job offers.”

MP for South Basildon & East Thurrock, Stephen Metcalfe recently visited DP World London Gateway to show his backing for the creation of new local jobs opportunities. On his visit he also remarked on the importance of gender balance in employment and welcomed new opportunities for women being created.

Stephen Metcalfe commented: “It is excellent to see so many new jobs being created in South Essex by business and industry. As the economy picks up, and we begin to see increased investment, it is fantastic to see new employment opportunities for people in our local community.”

Stephen Metcalfe also took the opportunity to encourage and welcome an increase in gender balance, commenting: “London Gateway has done a fantastic job of breaking traditional stereotypes and making employment in ports and docks more open to gender balance. This is exactly the kind of approach we need and it is important that in the creation of new jobs, we always keep in mind the need to ensure that our places of work are open to all.”
